Advanced development project with Ghent University

The true potential of composite materials has not been touched yet; even carbon-fibre technology is still at the start of its evolution and engineers still have to discover how to efficiently use composites.

Museeuw Bikes has found the superb shock-absorbing properties of flax fibres offer great advantages to the cyclist.

The combination of flax fiber and carbon fibre in one technical weave opens up very exciting possibilities, not only in the design of frame, but also in other components where vibration and shocks affect the rider.

In order to fully grasp the advantages of flax-based composites, from the microscopic core of the fibre all the way up to the finished bicycle frame, Museeuw Bikes have teamed up with the researchers of The University of Ghent.

In the coming years, Museeuw Bikes aims to further its lead in the design and development of high-end racing bicycles through constant innovation and optimization of their natural composite technology.

Some of the research projects Museeuw Bikes is currently involved in are:

  • Full material characterization of natural hybrid materials for computational structural analysis
  • Optimization of a bicycle road frame for weight, stiffness and comfort by using innovative lay-up designs and production processes
  • Computational (FEA) analysis of new frame concepts

Museeuw Bikes frame development and evaluation activities

In 2009 Museeuw Bikes demonstrated the advantages of their flax-fiber-technology. By using a custom-engineered test procedure (based on ISO2631: whole body vibration), Museeuw Bikes installed advanced accelerometers to measure and show the vibration damping characteristics in different frames (see vibration testing). In 2010, it is Museeuw Bikes intention to further expand this evaluation activity. These results contribute to continuously improving Museeuw Bikes frames.

From their design and testing facility based in the heartland of Belgian cycle racing, the team behind the research and development of Museeuw Bikes have made it their mission to invest all of their expertise, experience and resources in developing the 'next generation' of Museeuw bicycles. The vast experience of Italian bicycle designer Roberto Billato and the technical knowledge of composite material engineer Dave Luyckx offer Museeuw Bikes a solid foundation to achieve their goal of building the world’s best-riding bikes now ... and in the future.
